A hairdresser must be certified in order to operate in a professional capacity and obtain a license to practice in many states. The examination consists of a written exam and an oral exam. Both tests are typically offered every year.
A hair stylist must be licensed by the state he or she works in. Before applying for licensure, he or she must meet all the requirements. These may include: an education and training in the hair-care field, a completed course in cosmetology, and passing an exam administered by the state licensing board. A cosmetologist may also be required to take an exam specific to the state in which he or she works.
Before applying for licensure as a Hair stylist, the applicant must receive his or her hair services education from an accredited program. The licensure course must include general education, hair science, cosmetology and state licensing courses. Applicants must meet all the course prerequisites and meet all the academic prerequisites required to be admitted into an accredited university program. Candidates must also meet all the requirements of any other program requirements they may have undergone.
To become a hair stylist, an applicant must complete four years of hair training. He or she must complete a one-year internship with a hair care professional and earn their appropriate degree at the end of the one-year internship. Some states do not require that an internship is completed.
There are two types of programs that an individual can attend to become a hair salon certification program. Programs are either hands-on or classroom based. An individual who desires to work with patients in a clinical setting would benefit from the hands-on training.
An individual who wishes to work as a hair stylist must first sit for a written exam administered by the state licensing board. All state licensing boards require that an applicant pass this exam in order to become a licensed hairdresser. When these exams are completed, the individual then sits for an oral examination administered by the state licensing board.
After passing the licensure exam, an individual is now entitled to apply for his or her license. The individual must also submit certain documentation and information to the state licensing board. This information can include proof of education, certification, or previous experience.
After a license has been obtained, it is up to the licensing board to see that the applicant fulfills the requirements. This information is then entered into the state’s database. For each license, a new set of requirements is added. After the licensing board makes sure that the applicant is qualified, he or she will receive a license.
